![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() POLITICS - A SATIRE, COMEDY AND HORROR First of all you are probably asking why Bleach chose to talk about politics under the entertainment column. Well, let me ask you this - do you follow politics in any way or form? Well I do and to say the least if it’s not entertaining it’s nothing. Under democracy politics is supposedly for us - decisions that are made are suppose to be for us and for our well-being. By us I mean citizens. Now this in a lot of cases couldn’t be any further away from the truth. This year alone we have witnessed outrageous claims by our elected officials. Let’s look at our last federal election, Stockwell Day. He was a strong prime minister candidate, who was heavily favoured in western Canada. Well for those of you who do not follow this type of thing, and have no idea who this man is. He is more or less a rich golden boy who really isn’t that smart, he loss the election shortly after. It was then discovered that the taxpayers of Alberta paid off the legal fees he built up over a personal lawsuit. Alberta being the place where the lawsuit had taken place. Whoops, this of course like it should caused huge problems for Stockwell Day, his popularity has been severely damaged, he has been asked to resign as leader of the Canadian Alliance by his own caucus members. But will he? Of course not. Things like this are steadily occurring in our political system. Politicians get away with far too much and in a lot of cases the only thing they are legitimately concerned with is the lining of their own pockets, what abuse. And the worst thing about it is that no matter who holds the office, the same thing or something very similar will continue to happen. There is no avoiding it. That’s why I cannot understand anyone not wanting to vote, if you don’t vote you give up your right to complain about these imbeciles. So vote! In Newfoundland we have witnessed our share of political garbage as well. Everything from the selling of Churchill Falls, to the Voisey Bay nickel mine, to our backbone being of course the Cod fishery. I’ll give you something now, Canada has a 200-mile limit on the ocean, and this means that when you leave the east coast of Newfoundland you are in Canadian waters for 200 miles. For decades Europeans have been crossing this imaginary line and fishing cod. Rape of the resource. Do our government stop this injustice? No they let it go on because the market for exports of mainland products such as wheat from western Canada is too valuable of an industry to lose if the Europeans aren’t allowed to fish in our waters. So what’s more valuable? They've already proved that over the past 50 years and longer. But still Newfoundland is the one coming up short, and we pay for it everyday when our youth move to Alberta and other places in Western Canada. And that’s it - day in and day out. So what do we do? There is very little we can do, this is the worst of all. We put up with it. And do the best we possibly can do given our circumstances. Now isn’t all this entertaining, of course it is. It’s a mixture between a satire a comedy and in Newfoundland’s case a horror. - HuDson |
