An Angry Moment

RADIO

Being a DJ would get my vote as being one of the coolest jobs in the world. Think of it. There in a booth playing tunes that love life, knowing that your words are going out over the air waves reaching people the same way the sun reaches the ground at the break of dawn. That has to be quite the feeling.

I've always wanted to have my own radio show. Ever since I watched an old 80's movie starring Christian Slater as a boy. He was sort of a loaner, an outcast, no real friends, or people he could confide in. So he began to confide in an old radio. And before he knew it he was touching a whole generation of people. His words and his thoughts. I thought that was unbelievable. What a source of inspiration, not the kind you need to get up in the morning, or to do good in school, but more importantly the kind we all need just to be ourselves.

Sadly enough though it was only a movie. And in real life it's never that simple. Radio is great; it has the opportunity to be real and uncut. Not glamorized, commercialized, and worst yet censored beyond repair. The politics stink, surprise surprise they usually do stink. You got ratings to worry about. No ratings no money, oops that means no company Porsche this month. Damn and I was so looking forward to that car. If you don't have station managers breathing down your neck you got parents or old people screaming at you. Parents saying they want more Brittney and Nsync for their kids to listen too. Then you got the seniors screaming more Hank Williams and Willie Nelson. A good DJ just wouldn't be able to win. As soon as he started doing his own thing on the air he would probably receive a pink slip in the mail.

Howard Stern, love him or hate him. He is the closest thing I have ever heard to be considered good radio. He does what he wants, he has the guests he wants, and the majority of his listeners love him for it. The rest just tune in to see what he'll say next.

The bottom line, the only good radio is the radio that don't have to be concerned with playlists or pleasing ignorant assholes. The best radio station is the small one that is owned by the person whose voice goes out over the waves. Good radio is not censored only then is real.
