![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() DEATH OF A SMALL TOWN In the past 15 years Newfoundland has seen some drastic changes in its economy. Much of course due to the lost of its major industry The Fishery. This came to the Newfoundland people as being quite a shock. But with technology continuously getting better. It was really only a matter of time before the cod stocks depleted. And alas here we are 10 years later dealing with the consequences of the province's ancestors and foreign competitors. So I ask is it any big surprise when I say that Newfoundland is dying one small town at a time. I am 21 years old and now in the year 2001 I can say this is absolutely right. While I was in school, I remember the buses and how full they used to be. Now I see the bus go along by my home and there might be five kids on it. So what's going on? Are young couples having fewer children? Are they leaving their old towns and moving to larger centers? OR worst yet, are they leaving the province and going to places like the flatlands of Alberta? Chances are they're relocating to places like Alberta and Toronto where work is more plentiful and fewer qualifications are needed to do the work. Can you really blame these people? I don't think you can not justly anyway. After all everyone has the right to provide and be happy. And with no money and no job this is an impossibility. So while Newfoundland's youth continues to relocate, what should be done? What can be done? Make-work projects only last so long and aren't exactly the most reassuring jobs in the world. These are questions with a thousand answers, everyone believes something different and everyone will choose they're own path regardless if it's the best thing for Newfoundland or if its going to further damage it. So I don't really have any advice as such. But I believe if you love this province like I love it, TRY to build your life here! --HuDson |
