An Angry Moment

19 TO DRINK, 18 TO VOTE

Now let me see, this is surely a topic that burns everyone at the age of 18. And it is something that we have all gone through at some point in our lives.

So here's the thing from my humble point of view. In order to go out and buy alcohol a young adult has to be 19 years old (where I live), but to have a say in how a province or a country is administrated we have to be 18. Now is it just me or does this strike anyone else funny, or at least a bit strange. Because what I see is a year in the difference from being able to decide a government, and being able to buy alcohol with the purpose of having a good time with a few friends.

I would think that voting is something that requires more maturity than alcohol consumption. Most teenagers around this age drink, it is just illegal for them to buy it. In most other provinces in Canada the age of maturity is 18 but here in Newfoundland they figure our youth cannot handle it a year earlier. So we are blessed with 19. Now granted that it is only one short year in the difference. But I still feel the need to ask why?

Do our government believe that province administration don't involve much maturity or responsibility as oppose to teenagers being legally allowed to do what they've done and will continue to do anyway? That's how it seems. And to be quite honest about it I'm not sure if I should laugh, or be disgusted at our politician's ignorance. But either way I don't really expect to see any changes in this rule any time soon. So I guess youths will continue to break the law, and the only thing we have to look forward to at 18 is voting.
