It's undeniable that negative sexual attitudes about young girls sometimes reaches an extreme in America, especially in those families who have a strong cultural heritage coming from the Middle East or Africa, or from the Muslim faith. And, believe it or not, this still regularly takes place around the world - even in America.

That horrible thing is called, by those who perform it, a female circumcision. Others call it a Female Genital Mutilation, the abomination perpetrated on female children "for their own good".

Some cultures do not believe that sexuality is natural or good - not unless you are a boy, that is - and feel that it is their "duty" as a parent to do whatever they can to prevent their daughters from ever being sexual, or from ever being able to enjoy sex. Since the purpose of the clitoris is specifically to generate pleasure within the body, they believe that cutting it off will prevent the girl from becoming sexual, which they automatically consider being promiscuous, and will keep her a virgin for her husband until she gets married, and will keep her faithful to him after they are married.

I think it's really sick that things like this are still going on today. Yes, it may be more proper to save yourself for your husband, but even if you don't it doesn't make you a bad person. Parents are taking too much control of their children's lives, and are denying them the freedom to explore, and possibly learn from their mistakes. The young adults all have minds of their own and should have the freedom to make their own choices - they're humans just like the rest of us and deserve to take control of their own lives.

I, personally was revolted when I heard that these things were still happening around the world. But I guess some things just never change.
