![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() WHALE WATCHING Yesterday while I was on my lunch break, a good friend and I jumped into his boat and went out the bay for a ride. Sounds like an unusual thing to do on your lunch break I know but let me explain to you the geographical region I'm living and working from. The town I'm in is located along the shoreline of a protected salt-water bay. From where I work I can look out the window at the beautiful Atlantic Ocean. Being next to or in the water is just a natural part my life so therefore fishing on my lunch break is not that unusual. This of course is not the topic of my article so I'll move on. My friend and I drive about 20 minutes off shore in boat and soon found a place to stop, relax and enjoy the great sunny day we were having. It was only about 5 minutes after we stopped we hear a very loud blowing sound and a splash in the distance. We kind of looked at each other awkward and both assumed it must have been a wave or something crashed on the beach. Then it happened again, but this time we saw that it was no wave! It was a huge Pot Head whale about 100 feet from the boat coming up for air. I'll tell you, I grew up next to the ocean my whole life but this was the first time I actually seen a whale so close. It was an amazing site! After about 20 minutes of watching the whales surface and play around they were gradually getting closer. We decided that it was time to head back home, I'm sure our little 12' fiberglass boat was no match for any whale to swim by it. Like I said, that was the first time I have ever been whale watching I must say it was an exhilarating experience! It may or may not be considered a sport but it definitely is a worthwhile hobby for anyone that has access to the salt water. If you are planning a vacation I recommend you find a resort that can cater to you whale watching needs, you won't be sorry! - Lestat |
